Date: July 11, 2025
Technip Energies (PARIS: TE) has secured a “large” contract (€250–500 million) to perform preliminary engineering services for a Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) unit in Africa. The contract will run until September 30, 2025 and will be booked in the Q3 2025 Project Delivery backlog
What Is FLNG & Why It Matters
Floating LNG (FLNG) platforms are revolutionary offshore systems that liquefy, store, and offload natural gas directly at sea. They eliminate the need for costly onshore infrastructure like pipelines and long-term facilities—a major cost-and-time advantage .
Technip Energies is a global leader in FLNG, having delivered multiple high-profile projects—collectively handling ~8.2 million tons per annum (Mtpa) capacity:
-
PFLNG SATU (Malaysia)
-
Prelude FLNG (Australia)
-
Coral Sul FLNG (Mozambique)
Africa’s Strategic LNG Leap
Technip Energies is at the forefront of Africa’s energy transition:
-
Mozambique’s Coral Norte FLNG: Part of Eni’s $7.2 billion development. The government recently approved this unit (3.55 Mtpa capacity), with first LNG expected by H2 2028 .
-
Rovuma LNG FEED: Front-End Engineering Design contract secured in Sept 2024 for ExxonMobil’s 10 Mtpa project .
-
GTA FPSO: Achieved commercial operations offshore Mauritania/Senegal, processing 500 Million standard cubic feet/day (~2.3 Mtpa) .
Through partnerships and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs)—with entities like NAMCOR (Namibia) and Congo’s national companies—Technip Energies is advancing local content, technology transfer, and skills development in Africa.
What This Means for Technip Energies & the FLNG Market
For Technip Energies:
-
This contract strengthens their Q3 2025 backlog and aligns with their strategy to deliver innovative LNG and hydrogen solutions .
-
It underscores the company’s leadership in offshore LNG engineering on a global scale.
For Africa:
-
This project boosts energy access, supports climate goals by substituting coal, and channels significant economic growth and infrastructure investment.
