South Africa advances plans to decarbonize shipping sector

South Africa is taking significant steps towards decarbonizing its shipping sector, aligning with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The country recently hosted a national workshop co-organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) in Pretoria. Over 70 senior officials from government, industry, and civil society attended the workshop, which focused on four key areas:
– Alignment with IMO Net-Zero Framework: Implementing the IMO’s strategy to reduce GHG emissions from ships and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
– Fuel Transitions and Decarbonization Technologies: Exploring alternative fuels and technologies to reduce emissions, such as green hydrogen and wind-assisted propulsion.
– Workforce Development and Training: Modernizing maritime education and training programs to equip the workforce with the necessary skills for a low-carbon shipping industry.
– Financing the Green Transition: Identifying funding mechanisms and government incentives to support the transition to a low-carbon shipping sector.

The workshop resulted in a set of priority actions, including:
– Governance: Establishing a national task force on shipping decarbonization, developing national action plans, and raising awareness at all levels.
– Infrastructure: Exploring government incentives and identifying funding mechanisms for alternative fuel production, promoting clean fuel infrastructure, and improving access to finance for green shipping investments.
– Workforce: Initiating skills gap assessments and investing in training programs for green maritime careers.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, emphasized the need for swift progress and action in decarbonizing the shipping sector, stating, “Let us move from statements to strategies, from planning to piloting, and from ambition to real action… Africa must be part of designing the route”.

South Africa’s commitment to decarbonizing its shipping sector is a significant step towards reducing its environmental impact and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change
