Peter Amo-Bediako, the former Director of the Takoradi Port, was relieved of his duties effective April 17, 2025, by President John Dramani Mahama. During his tenure, Amo-Bediako oversaw significant infrastructure improvements and expansion projects at the port.

Some of his notable achievements

  • Expansion and Modernization: Amo-Bediako hinted at the port’s potential migration from an export-driven to an import-driven facility after the completion of expansion works, including the construction of the Atlantic Terminal Services, a multi-purpose container terminal.
  • Increased Efficiency: The new bulk jetty, which became operational under his oversight, is expected to improve stevedoring activities from 8,000 tons per day to 72,000 tons per day, reducing vessel turnaround time from a week to about two and a half days.
  • Job Creation and Economic Growth: Amo-Bediako emphasized that the expansion projects would create jobs and stimulate economic growth, with the port presenting opportunities for investors to partner with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

Sandra Opoku, the former Director of the Tema Port, was relieved of her duties effective April 16, 2025. During her tenure, Opoku achieved several notable milestones.

Some of her notable achievements

  • Port Expansion and Modernization: Opoku oversaw the expansion of the Tema Port, increasing its container handling capacity.
  • Operational Efficiency: She implemented initiatives to improve cargo clearance times and reduce dwell time.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Opoku promoted eco-friendly practices within the port community.

Both Opoku and Amo-Bediako have demonstrated their capabilities in port management, making them potential candidates to take on each other’s previous roles. However, the decision would ultimately depend on their individual strengths, weaknesses, and fit for the specific port’s needs.

Other possible candidates to replace Amo-Bediako and Sandra Opoku

Michael Luguje: As the Director General of GPHA, Luguje has oversight responsibility for all ports in Ghana, including Takoradi. His experience and knowledge of port operations make him a suitable candidate.

Kwame Gyan Esq: Although not a direct GPHA employee, Kwame Gyan’s experience as Director and Chairman of IBISTEK and Atlantic Terminal Services Limited, which has partnered with GPHA on several projects, could make him a suitable candidate or provide valuable insights for the role.

Edward Kofi Osei: Osei’s experience as former Director of the Tema Port could make him a suitable candidate.
