Container shipping on Russian Railways network rises 9.1% YoY in Jan-May, 7.7% YoY in May

Container transportation on the Russian Railways network in all areas, including exports, imports, and transit, rose 9.1% year-on-year to 3.243 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of loaded and empty containers in January-May 2024, Russian Railways said.

There was specifically an increase of 11.6% year-on-year to 1.3 million TEU in domestic shipping in January-May 2024.
The number of loaded containers shipped in all areas increased 7.5% to 2.349 million TEU, with 33.9 million tonnes of cargo transported in January-May 2024, growth of 9.2% year-on-year. This included chemicals and soda at 344,500 TEU; timber cargo at 241,600 TEU (-0.2%); chemical and mineral fertilizers at 200,300 TEU (up 1.8-fold); automobiles and components at 194,200 TEU (+15.5%); hardware at 179,700 TEU (+4.8%); industrial goods at 167,500 TEU (+0.3%); machinery, machine tools, engines at 159,800 TEU (-13.1%); paper at 152,800 TEU (-3.9%); construction cargo at 109,500 TEU (up 1.4-fold); ferrous metals at 88,700 TEU (-19.3%); other and consolidated cargo at 84,400 TEU (+19.6%); grain at 54,700 (+21.5%); non-ferrous metals at 51,400 TEU (-2.4%); oil and oil products at 43,900 TEU (+7.8%); milled products at 18,300 TEU (up 3.6-fold); fish at 15,900 TEU (+10.4%); non-ferrous ore and sulfur raw materials at 12,800 TEU (+8.7%); meat and animal oil at 11,400 TEU (+11.1%); potatoes, vegetables, and fruit at 6,500 TEU (-18%); and miscellaneous food products at 128,200 TEU (+6.3%).

Shipping in all areas rose 7.7% year-on-year to 674,600 TEU in May 2024.
