Ghana Armed Forces Launch Gender Training Manual Orientation at Eastern Naval Command

The Ghana Armed Forces have launched a gender training manual orientation at the Eastern Naval Command to improve gender awareness, inclusivity and operational effectiveness across the defence services.

Accra, Ghana — The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has launched a formal orientation on its Gender Training Manual at the Eastern Naval Command, marking a key step in strengthening gender-responsive practices across the country’s military services.

The event — attended by senior military personnel, gender focal points and training officers — underscores the GAF’s commitment to aligning its operations with international gender standards and promoting inclusivity within its ranks.

📘 What the Orientation Covered

During the programme, instructors introduced the GAF Gender Training Manual — a comprehensive guide designed to enhance understanding and application of gender principles in both operational and support roles within the Armed Forces.

Key focus areas included:

  • Understanding gender concepts and terminology within military contexts
  • Integrating gender perspectives into planning, training and decision-making
  • Promoting equal opportunities and respectful workplaces
  • Responding to gender-based issues, including prevention and reporting
  • Supporting family and community welfare among service personnel

Senior officers also highlighted the role of gender-responsive policy in boosting cohesion, discipline and operational effectiveness — aligning with broader efforts by Ghana’s security sector to meet international best practices.

🌍 Strategic Importance for the Ghana Armed Forces

Gender-focused training in defence institutions is increasingly recognised as vital for:

👍 Operational Readiness: Teams that understand and apply gender principles are better equipped to operate in diverse environments.
👍 Human Rights Protection: Gender training supports the dignity and rights of all personnel, with a focus on preventing and addressing harassment and discrimination.
👍 International Compatibility: The manual strengthens Ghana’s ability to contribute effectively to UN peace support operations, many of which require gender-responsive frameworks.
👍 Societal Trust: Inclusive security services foster confidence and support from the general public — essential for civil–military relations.

Military officials at the launch emphasised that the manual is not a one-off reference, but a living document to be incorporated into continuous professional development courses throughout the GAF.

📈 Broader Context: Gender in Military Institutions

Across the globe, defence organisations have accelerated efforts to mainstream gender equality and responsiveness into training, doctrine and leadership development. Research by the United Nations and international defence think tanks shows that:

  • Gender-inclusive armed forces often exhibit stronger decision-making, resilience and unit cohesion.
  • Women’s participation in peace operations and security decision-making enhances mission effectiveness and legitimacy.
  • Targeted training improves the capacity to identify and respond to gender-based violence and support affected personnel.

Ghana’s efforts align with these global trends and reaffirm its position as a responsible partner in international peace and security cooperation.
